Abstract

Depression is a mental illness with a high prevalence in chronic patients. There is evidence in the literature that physical activity can act as a possible preventative and treatment for depressive symptoms. The aim of our study was to investigate the relationship between physical activity and depression in a group of individuals with diabetes and hypertension. We collect a sample of 65 individuals aged between 40 and 94 years, of which 41.5% are male. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. No significant relationship was found between physical activity and depression. Women had higher levels of depression, about two times higher. It was also realized that the worse the perception of health is higher the levels of depression.
